World Guesser

World Guesser — better known by its own name, WorldGuessr — is a free, open-source alternative to GeoGuessr. The premise takes one sentence: you are dropped somewhere on Earth in a Street View panorama and have to work out where you are. No download, no install, and no account required to play a round.

Every round starts with a road. Maybe it is a highway through the Australian outback, maybe a cobbled street in Portugal, maybe a gravel track in the Andes. You can pan and zoom the panorama freely, and you can move along the road for as long as you like, so the whole game comes down to observation. Driving side tells you a continent. Bollards, guardrails, and road markings narrow it to a country. Number plates, language on signs, and the shape of a power pole narrow it to a region. The best players are not memorising locations — they are reading clues.

When you are ready, you open the map and drop a pin. The game scores the distance between your guess and the real location, so a near miss on the right continent still beats a confident guess on the wrong one. Each session is five rounds, and your score builds across them. There is a hint system if you get stuck, though hints are limited, and the leaderboard rewards the people who need them least.

There are several ways to play. Country Guesser strips the game back to a single decision — pick the right country and nothing else — which makes it the friendliest starting point. Classic mode is the full five-round distance-scoring game. Beyond solo play you can match against other players online, where the fastest accurate guess wins, or open a party round and play as a team. The site usually shows ten thousand players online, so a match is never far away.

WorldGuessr is the work of developer Coder Gautam and has been running since July 2024, with an Android release alongside the web version. The code is open source, which is why the web build keeps pace with the mobile app. It runs on desktop, tablet, and phone, and the interface adapts to a portrait screen without losing the map controls.
