Friday Night Funkin'

Friday Night Funkin' is the browser build of the rhythm game that started as a Newgrounds weekend jam in 2020 and turned into one of the most modded games of the decade. It runs in a browser window — no download, no account, no install.

The idea is a rap battle written as a note chart. Arrows scroll up the screen in time with the music, and you press the matching arrow key the moment each one reaches the target line at the top. Hit the notes and your side of the health bar holds steady; miss enough of them and it drains, the song stops, and the week is over. You play Boyfriend, and every opponent in front of you is answered by playing their song back at them.

The songs are where the difficulty lives, not the controls. There are only four keys and one rule, so the challenge is the chart itself: faster passages, notes that arrive in odd parts of the bar, and long holds you have to keep through the noise. Each opponent has a different musical personality and a different set of patterns, and the difficulty setting recharts the song rather than just speeding it up, which is why clearing a track on Easy is a usable map of the notes that will come at you on Hard.

Story Mode walks the weeks in order and carries a combined score across them; Freeplay opens every song you have unlocked, one at a time, so you can go back to the track that keeps ending your runs. It runs on keyboard input, so it is at its best on a desktop or a laptop.
